California Hindu Temple vandalism: US Lawmakers condemn attack, demand accountability

Prominent Indian-American Congressmen, along with several US lawmakers, strongly condemned the recent vandalism of the Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Hindu Temple in Newark, California. The temple suffered defacement and anti-India graffiti, prompting an investigation by the police as a potential hate crime. Images posted on social media have revealed objectionable graffiti, including the word ‘Khalistan.’ The incident has prompted global outrage, with lawmakers, law enforcement, and community members united in their demand for a thorough investigation.

Lawmakers Demand Accountability

Lawmakers, including Congressman Ro Khanna, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Congressman Shri Thanedar, express their condemnation of the disgraceful act. They emphasize the importance of holding those responsible accountable and standing united against bigotry.

Call for Thorough Investigation

Congressman Shri Thanedar denounced the attack and calls for a thorough investigation into the crime. He emphasizes the fundamental tenets of religious freedom and communal harmony, urging swift action by law enforcement to ensure the safety and sanctity of all places of worship.

Bipartisan Condemnation

Congresswoman Barbara Lee from California unequivocally condemned the attack, emphasizing that hatred in all forms cannot be tolerated. State Senator Niraj Antani, the first Hindu-American State Senator in Ohio, condemns the vandalization in the strongest terms, calling for the perpetrators to be caught and punished.

US State Department’s Response

The US State Department, through its Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, condemns the vandalism and welcomes the efforts by the Newark Police Department to hold those responsible accountable. The department joins the bipartisan chorus in denouncing the attack on the Hindu temple.

Consulate General of India’s Strong Condemnation

The Consulate General of India in San Francisco strongly condemned the defacing of the temple and expresses concern over the sentiments of the Indian community. The Consulate presses for a quick investigation and prompt action against the vandals by US authorities.

The City of Newark Police Department is as of now actively investigating the incident, considering it a targeted act and a potential hate crime. Officers are collecting evidence, reviewing surveillance footage, and urging community members with information to come forward.
