North India shivers as mercury plummets, rain likely across states in coming days

As the cold wave tightened its grip in parts of North India, the national capital woke up to an even chillier morning accompanied by dense fog. The Meteorological Office has predicted light showers in the plains and fresh snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir for Friday.

Visibility plummeted to 50 meters in Punjab and 400 meters in Delhi on Friday, while most parts of Uttar Pradesh experienced visibility at 500 meters. The minimum temperature across most parts of North India ranged between 4 to 8 degrees Celsius, expected to drop further with the possibility of rain.

According to the All India Weather Forecast Bulletin, most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and North Rajasthan are experiencing minimum temperatures in the range of 4-8 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, temperatures in areas of Uttar Pradesh, South Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and interior Odisha range between 8-12 degrees Celsius.

This morning, at around 5.30 am, dense fog affected specific areas of Delhi, reducing visibility to 50-22 meters. Some regions of east Uttar Pradesh also experienced shallow fog with visibility between 500-1000 meters, along with isolated pockets in west Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Tripura.

Rainfall prediction in North and South region

Looking ahead, the upcoming five days may bring isolated light rainfall or snowfall to Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and northwest Rajasthan on December 22 and 23. There’s also a prediction of light to moderate rainfall in specific places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep during the next five days.

Dense fog warning:

Dense fog alerts for the next few days cover isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana for three days, north Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura for two days, and Odisha on December 23 and 24. Minimum temperature updates indicate a rise of 2-3 degrees Celsius over the next two days in the northwest and east India, with no significant changes afterwards.
